Rifle Marksmanship and Sniper / Observer Course

LOCATION: Alameda County Sheriff's Office - Regional Training Center, 6289 Madigan Road, Dublin CA 94568 [MAP]

 

DESCRIPTION: This 48-hour course is designed to provide the necessary foundation for rifle and tactical skills for the Sniper/Observer to function in support of high-risk law enforcement operations. Course content includes but is not limited to: weapons maintenance, proper zeroing, conventional and unconventional position shooting, extended range marksmanship skills, field craft, ballistics, team missions, organization, information collection, reporting procedures, and tactical command post.

INSTRUCTORS: Deputy Jeff Reed, Alameda County Sheriff's Office, Former Sniper Team Coordinator for the Sheriff's Office Special Response Unit. Deputy Reed was also the principal firearms instructor for the unit. Deputy Reed is a certified NRA Law Enforcement, Long Range Rifle Instructor and a graduate of the U.S.M.C. Law Enforcement Scout Sniper Instructor School. Deputy Reed has been a Firearms Instructor for over twenty years.

PREREQUISITES: This course is not a basic rifle school. This course has both physical and mental components that will be highly challenging. Students must be full-time peace officers or active duty military personnel that have been selected by their respective agency to attend this course. All students must have completed Basic SWAT and currently be assigned to a tactical unit. All students must have outstanding rifle marksmanship skills and a working knowledge of the weapon they will be using during this course. It is highly recommended that potential students attend a basic patrol rifle class before attending this course. All students who are not members of the Alameda County Sheriff s Office, must sign a liability waiver.

PRESENTATION HOURS: This is a 48-hour course that begins at 0800 on the first day. There will be one night session during the course that will begin at 1300.

CERTIFICATION: POST Plan IV.  POST Cert #1010-23020.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: All participants must have the following weapons and equipment: One quality, departmental issued/authorized scoped sniper rifle, 500 rounds of Factory match grade ammunition, suitable sniper rifle sling(carry straps are not acceptable), flashlight-white/red light capability, weapons cleaning equipment, ear and eye protection, knee/elbow pads, ground pad, sunscreen, day/utility backpack, canteen, gas mask, note taking materials, spotting scope or quality binoculars, rangefinder, weapon carry case and/or sniper drag bag, range clothing/tactical uniform, hat, body armor or load bearing vest, communication equipment, pocket calculator, and any other specialized sniper team equipment issued by the student's agency.
