Firearms-Long Rifle Instructor
 
FEE: $552.00

LOCATION: Alameda County Sheriff's Office-Firearms Training Unit, 5301 Madigan Road, Dublin CA 94568 [MAP]

DESCRIPTION: This 40-hour course consists of instruction and practical exercises focused on the specific needs of the rifle instructor, the use and application of the rifle as it pertains to law enforcement, and the skills to instruct others in its use and maintenance. The instructor/students will demonstrate the following: knowledge of policy and procedure guidelines for the long Rifle Officer, knowledge on deployment of the rifle, ballistics, proper disassembly, assembly and cleaning of the weapon, proper zeroing techniques of the weapon, and proficiency with the weapon by successfully completing position and movement courses.

PREREQUISITES: Students must be full-time peace officers, or active-duty military personnel. This course is not designed to teach students how to shoot.  Students are expected to be highly proficient with their department's long gun.  This is not a basic rifle class. Personnel must be a certified Firearms Instructor to attend this class. Personnel must be selected by their respective agency to attend this course. It is recommended, but not required, students attend an intermediate or advanced rifle operator course prior to attending this course.  All students who are not members of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office must sign a liability waiver.

* Rifle and/or pistol sighting systems MUST be zeroed prior to arriving to the class. *

PRESENTATION HOURS: This is a 40-hour course that starts at 0800 on the first day of the course. There will be one night session during the course that will start at 1300.

POST CERTIFICATION: POST Plan IV.  POST Cert #1010-31801

COLLEGE CREDITS: 1.5 Chabot College Units on completion of course.

Important Steps for Enrollment:

  1. Register on Our Website:
    First, secure your spot by registering and paying directly through our website. The payment goes to us, not to the college.
  2. Apply to Chabot College:
    After registering with us, you must apply separately to Chabot College for course credit. Visit the Chabot College website at Chabot College to complete the application process. For best results, use Google Chrome when applying.
  3. Send Application Information:
    Once your application to the college is complete, email the following details to CC-ACSOAcademy@chabotcollege.edu:
    • Subject Line: (Insert Course Title and Start Date)
    • Your Full Name
    • Application Confirmation Number
    • Your Birthdate (MM/DD/YYYY)

This process is necessary to receive 1.5 Chabot College units upon successful completion of the course.

 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: All participants must have the following weapons and equipment:

  • One agency approved patrol rifle (AR-15/M-16 recommended) with sling.
  • 1000 rounds factory ammunition (minimum) for the rifle.
  • Three - 30 round magazines for rifle.
  • Rifle magazine pouches and/or holder.
  • Weapon mounted / handheld flashlight with extra batteries.
  • Agency approved service handgun with duty belt and holster.
  • Three magazines for handgun.
  • 100 rounds factory ammunition (minimum) for handgun.
  • Cleaning equipment for both weapons.
  • Body armor
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Gas Mask
  • Agency approved BDU uniform SHALL be worn during course with hat.
  • Red hats or red shirts are NOT allowed on the range for students.
  • A laptop and thumb drive are recommended but not required.
  • Optional equipment: Hydration system, Knee/elbow pads, shooting pad, sunscreen, and water.

Note:  All equipment utilized and worn must be authorized in their agency’s policies.

CERTIFICATION STANDARDS:  Students must shoot minimum score of 90% (270/300 points) on the rifle instructor qualification course on the first day.  Students who are unable to pass the qualification course will be dismissed from the course.  It is highly recommended the student’s rifle is zeroed at 50 yards for both iron and optic sights.  There will also be a written test at the end of the course which students must pass with a minimum 80% score.

Below is the qualification standard required to successfully complete this course:

RIFLE QUALIFICATION COURSE

Target: ACSO-21 Silhouette

Ammunition: 60 rounds (Starting magazine has 15 rounds, all other magazines can be filled to capacity)

 

CONFIRMATION EMAILS: A confirmation email will be sent out a month prior to the course. If no response is received two weeks before the start of closure, you will be dropped from the course.

PAYMENT POLICY: As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline operations and enhance the experience for all students, we are implementing a new policy regarding tuition payments. All course tuition must be paid in full prior to the start of class. Payments should be completed no later than the first day of class. If payment is not received by this date, the individual may be asked to reschedule or defer attendance until payment is received.

Tuition payments can be made online during the course registration process. Alternatively, payments can be made by phone or in person on the first day of class. We accept cash, check, or credit card as suitable forms of payment. Please note that a 2.49% non-refundable service fee will apply to all credit card transactions.

We strongly encourage early payment to avoid any disruptions to your enrollment.

CANCELLING REGISTRATION:  To cancel a registration for a course, please notify the Regional Training Center via e-mail or phone. E-mail cancellations can be directed to rtcinfo@sheriffacademy.com and phone cancellations to (925) 551-6970. In all cases, course cancellations less than 5 business days prior to class start date, may be subject to a course cancellation fee equal to 50% of the course tuition. Students who fail to attend the course without cancelling prior to the start of the course (No Show) will be charged the full course tuition.
